TIERE IM KRIEG
Neues vom Löwen und Bären in Mosul

Video

News from the lion and bear in Mosul

Video

Screenshot 2017-02-08 09.01.48

The offensive on the IS in West Mosul has begun.
And „our“ bear and lion are still in Mosul. We have no chance at present to get them and the owner will not give them so easily.
The animals are in the East part of Mosul, where it is safer.
But the food had gone out and they were still in the dirt.
Sulaiman Tameer of KOARP has found contacts and someone who is cleaning the enclosure. Everything was ready, but then the offensive started and the road to Mosul and the checkpoints were blocked, Sulaiman could not drive.
But he does not give up so quickly.
He drove to the closed border and the helper came from the Mosul side. The money was handed over, which Robin Hood had sent again. A heartfelt thank you to our donors!
Today finally cleaning could be started, the helper is not finished yet … but it will.

cleaning_2.17
And food was bought. 160 kg of apples and 210 kg of chicken. One must remember Mosul is a war zone and we are happy about everything we get for the animals. Because the local people must also eat.
And we brought the second time food.

futter_mosul_22.2.2017_2
Sulaiman writes to me, the animals look already better, the ribs one no longer sees and they have the stomach full lining :-)

futter_mosul_22.2.17
We do not know what the near future holds. But we will not let them down.
As soon as the circumstances allow and we have prepared everything for our further work in Iraq (workshops, etc.), I will be back on the road and go with Sulaiman to Mosul as long as I get an entry permit to Mosul.
Many thanks to Sulaiman, thank you to the helpers on site, which we pay naturally and many thanks to our donors.
We keep you up to date.

Update: 6.Februar 2017

News from Mosul.

The animals are now regularly fed.
Sulaiman Tameer is in daily contact with the volunteers on site. We buy food.
Concerning of the bear I asked our specialist Dr. Borka-Vitalis Levente in Romania, he knows about bears and he has advised us what to feed. Apples, pears, plums (contain fructose/glucose – high digestable, with a fast energy suppliment), corn and only 20% meat best goat or sheep.

Next we want to make sure that the enclosures are cleaned. And will bring in branches and other environmentel enrichment.
Because it will still need time until we get the animals out of there, if it works at all. But we are all trying to get those two remaining victims of the war in the Mossul / Iraq Zoo.

My sincere thanks to all who help.

November in Reghin/Romania

Din păcate, politicienii noștri permit adesea să-i împuște.
Suntem într-adevăr in varful piramidei evoluției?

Dear Minister
dear Madam or Sir,

for years, I have been active in animal welfare in Romania. I spent a lot of money and I still do, because I regard it as my duty to help Romania‘s animals and I believe in a change for the better.
My organisation Robin Hood is successfully involved in helping stray dogs by supporting shelters, initiating castration campaigns, creating awareness in schools, and working together with the local authorities. In all those years, I have noticed a change taking place in people’s minds, a change concerning their attitude towards dogs, wild animals and animals in general.

I am working in different and often very difficult places all around the world like Greenland, Iraq, Armenia, and Siberia. Fortunately, I see some progress.
For example, last week, we Austrians looked with pleasure to Romania after your government banned trophy hunting on large predators. This is fabulous news, since many Austrian hunters came to your country to shoot a bear or some other wild animal and paid lots of money for that.
In Austria thereis maybe one single bear left in the wild, and if we are lucky there is one wolf family roaming the wilderness. Sadly, our politicians often allow to shoot them. So we were very impressed about your country’s decision.

The bad news is that quite recently a young bear was shot dead in Romania. All he wanted was to escape. Rabies? There was no sign the disease. So why was he killed.
Why wasn’t he narcotized? You have splendid experts on wild animals who can use a tranquilizer gun. Maybe you think you have enough bears so one more or less does not count. But it does. Every single bear counts. Because sooner or later even in Romania wild animals will be extinct because of our faults.
Are we really on top of pyramid of evolution? No, we are not.
Is it our duty to protect wildlife? Yes, it is.
And do we have to find ways to let it coexist on a planet we almost have destroyed? The answer is obvious. I am sure there are other means to solve „problems“ if a bear comes too close (that is not his fault).
For example, the establishment of a special bear task force would be a splendid idea. But it has to be run only by dedicated people who understand the behaviour of wild animals and respect them. Maybe it would help to discuss with the experts who really care and find a proper solution.

Let us listen to the voice of the vast majority of people who are against killing. They are absolutely right. It is about time to introduce non-lethal measures.

I represent an NGO that raises pilot projects in countries where nobody else dares to help. But Romania has always been something special: I really love it and I have seen success in my activities all over the years. Without a doubt, Romania is ready for the next proper steps regarding animal wefare and animal rights.
Or to quote Mahatma Gandhi: <<First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.>>

I am looking forward to recieving your esteemed answer.

With kind regards,
